EPA Regulations

A big vote is going through the senate tomorrow; attached to a bill on small businesses are three varying amendments which would affect the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. (See, "US Senate May Vote to Halt EPA Rules on Wednesday", http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110329-715098.html) The main driver behind the proposals seems to be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. I would ask him why exactly he thinks that limiting greenhouse gas emissions would be such a strain on job creation when the "green" sector is a booming industry and real investments in environmental change from the federal government would only increase this potential source of jobs. This is to say nothing of the reality of climate change or the foreign policy implications of being dependent on fossil fuels.

Tobacco Smoke

I met someone yesterday who told me he didn't like trees.

How can this be possible?

...something which they have us do in some of my classes; follow a trail. After you exhale when smoking a cigarette the toxins in the smoke do not just vanish - you may no longer be able to see them but they have a large effect on you, your loved ones, and the world around you.

Follow the trail, see what you find. I double dog dare you :)

Petition

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatechange/news/latest/uk-science-statement.html

Recently there has been a media explosion over the e-mails between some scientists released which apparently "prove" that scientists have been tampering with scientific evidence supporting global warming in order to make it seem more drastic than it is, etc.

I don't know full details about the topic, but I believe the issue is that for a graph displaying the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere they combined two methods of analysis in one graph; for past data they used tree-line dating to ascertain the levels of CO2 which where in the atmosphere and for modern/present-day they used direct sampling of the air quality. Both methods are reasonable, scientific methods and it should not skew the data to combine the results of the two into one graph. From my understanding the confusion has arisen because this point was not clearly stated on the graph. However, feel free to look into the subject further, as I really don't know too many details about it.

The link above addresses the concerns which have arisen as a result of these e-mails in a very clear manner, it is a petition signed by scientists stating unequivocally that the phenomenon known as "global warming" does exist and that there is no doubt that it is human-caused.

Copenhagen Begins!

Some of you might not be aware but today marks the beginning of the International Conference in Copenhagen! The Kyoto Protocol, the key piece of international environmental legislation "runs out" in 2012, the last year marked off in any of it's provisions. The goal of the Copenhagen Conference are to hopefully come up with some new agreement on where the international community wants to go, environmentally.

Also exciting, Obama had previously planned to drop by Copenhagen during the opening days of the Conference. He has now announced his intention to postpone his visit and appear at the Conference on the last day, December 18th. This is significant because it is in the last days of the Conference which the majority of the significant decisions are made and agreements reached. The fourth quarter of a close game, only two minutes on the clock. According to the general public, news, and people who seem to have experience with these types of things, having Obama appear would be like having your starters playing the last two minutes, no injuries and everyone rearin' to go! :)

We'll see what happens, but hopefully some real progress will be made.
